An Integrated Experience
I’m a technologist first and foremost. The money for this hobby comes from my work running an analytics consultancy for nearly twenty years. Before that I was building web pages and writing code for companies and my alma mater, Oregon State University. I grew up around computers and started working on the Internet in 1996 back when it was just, well, ugly.
Really ugly.
Now I dabble in application development, the use of artificial intelligence to make our lives easier, and web site design. The latter is relevant because when I went looking for a platform to host my photos, I really didn’t find anything I liked. I looked at YouPic, 1x, 500px, and more, but none of them offered the flexibility I was looking for.
It’s not awesome and the images are humongous — I’m not particularly worried about people stealing my work since I can see nobody is actually looking — but it allows me to do some more interesting things with the photos that aren’t possible on the other plaforms. One of those things is the map I am maintaining for the desconsos I photograph:
If you see this after your page is loaded completely, leafletJS files are missing.
It’s a basic Google Map, visually modified to be a little easier to use, that allows me to keep track of where I have found memorials. Click any of those markers and you’ll see what I found. The locations aren’t 100% accurate but if you went to the general area, you’d find the same scene I did when I took the photo.
It’s probably just a gizmo, but I’m all about gizmos.
I’m sure I will find more stuff like this I can use to create a wholly integrated experience. I have an Apple Vision Pro app that shares panorama photos on a map of the globe, maybe I’ll adapt that for this purpose at some point!
