Some descansos are elaborate affairs: built to last and decorated with flowers and colors and momentos …

And some are not.

I had flagged a memorial on Highway 197 just outside of The Dalles but when we were looking for the exact location we came across this simple white cross.

Nothing to identify the deceased, just two pieces of wood, a screw, and some rocks.

In a way, despite all the complexity and effort that goes into some of the descansos I have photographed, this symbolizes the entire project.

The desire to remember.
