Sunflower

Sunflower

Another descanso that I have passed probably a thousand times and never really noticed until I started this project. It’s in a difficult spot to get to, just before the very popular Beacon Rock hiking trails, but I persevered and finally got the shots today.

It’s a nice little memorial, a small cross, some other decorations, and a big metal sunflower. The sunflower is most of what you’d see driving by, at least until the things grow up on the side of the road, then I suspect the entire thing is difficult to see.

There are a handful of hummingbirds represented on the descanso, metal and glass, and hummingbird flowers around the base of the cross.

There was solitary playing card — the king of clubs — sitting on the ground and starting to fade. I am not sure if it’s part of the memorial or just something that blew in but it caught my eye.

All in all it’s a nice little memorial as these things go. It’s perilously close to the road and I have noticed that WSDOT has gotten a little more aggressive about cutting back brush on the side of the highways, no doubt for safety reasons. I hope this memorial doesn’t get cleaned out at some point.

Rest in peace, sunflower.
