Toni

Toni

Robert and Antonia (Toni) were probably heading home to Madras on a Saturday afternoon when they were killed by a semi. The view of the mountains here is spectacular, but the traffic is moving downhill from the North at a furious clip.

The accident was in 2020 but the descanso is still a colorful pop on the side of a busy highway. It’s just past the intersection where the couple died, easy to see if you’re looking.

Robert and Toni were fifty three and forty six, respectively, when they died. Part of the memorial appears to have fallen over, making me wonder how often people visit these days.

I could not see the name behind the flower necklace so I did something I haven’t done before: I moved part of the memorial ever-so-slightly so that I could get a better shot.

I feel a little guilty about doing this, but I wasn’t going to have Robert’s name without doing it, and without his name I wasn’t going to figure out who they were. I’m justifying my actions, I know, but more and more I find myself curious about what happened that precipitated the descanso and so look a little harder for identifying information.

I was probably going to burn in hell when I die already for the life I’ve lived, but not it’s for sure.

Maybe I’ll see some of you there?
