Carmen

Carmen

After seeing Xochitl’s descanso, the marker for Carmen Gonzales Zumaya is almost invisible. A small cross, fronted by three cinderblocks for protection or support marks her final resting place.

Carmen was sixty six when she was killed on this lonesome highway near the tip of the Baja Peninsula. The fence behind her went on for miles in both directions, apparently protecting the cactus from the road.

It didn’t protect Carmen.

Descanse en paz, Carmen.
