Violeta

Violeta Naomi Gallegos Colmenero and her mother were run over by a cowardly bus driver who fled the scene on one of the main streets of Sayulita, Mexico. Her descanso is in the middle of the road she was killed on, in the middle of the busiest street in Sayulita.

Violeta was four years old.

I suspect that like most four year olds, Violeta loved animals. There is a cat adorning the cross to the right of her little chapel, with a heart on the cross to the left. Like many in Mexico, her descanso is well constructed and clearly there as a memorial for all time.

Violeta’s mother, Irma Colmenero Fernández, was also killed by the bus. She was only forty one.

I suspect that given the popularity of Sayulita, especially this time of year during Spring Break for American colleges, that hundreds of thousands of people walk right by Violeta’s memorial and don’t give it a second thought.
