Climaco
I learned on my last trip to Mexico, this is a country that loves their descansos and does a lot to honor their dead. I also learned that any visit to Mexico is going to give me (sadly) lots of opportunities to shoot, and so Climaco Perez is just the first of many memorials I took photos of during my trip.

“Descanse en paz” the memorials often read, “rest in peace.” Perez was only thirty two when he was killed on the road leading into Punta Mita near Puerto Vallarta.

His descanso would be easy to miss if you weren’t looking; off the road down in a ditch, almost the color of the surroundings. Adorned with cervezas, candles, and plastic flowers as so many are, Climaco’s marker also had a pair of shoes hanging on the back of the cross.
I would love to know more about Perez and why the shoes, but alas, while culturally it seems common to build these memorials, it seems uncommon to have any sort of mention on the Internet about the accident or death.

Regardless, descanse en paz, Climaco.
