Lance

Lance

I was still being somewhat choosy about which descansos I stopped for when I passed Lance. I was driving and caught the cross out of the corner of my eye.

I immediately turned around.

Lance’s descanso has an incredible hat on the top of it, fashioned entirely out of barbed wire. Picture that, someone spent hours bending metal in the shape of a cowboy hat. Incredibly, Lance was killed by an elk, indirectly. Another driver crashed into the elk, her car rolled and slammed into Lance’s truck.

He was seventy three.

His memorial is beautiful. The plaque on the front with his name has a hat and pair of boots rendered onto it. And the entire thing is set in front of a wide open Southwestern sky. None of the photos I took did it justice at all.

Rest in peace, Lance.
