Blue Box
Like Xochitl’s descanso, this one was an easy spot; a bright blue box with a colorful wreath on top at the top of a grade on Highway 19. It was so beautiful and iconic we had to stop, but I’m going to admit, this wasn’t the safest situation when it came to parking.

I couldn’t see the name of the individual being memorialized since I didn’t want to move anything but it was clear they were loved. Or at least at one point they were; the glass had been broken, the contents of the box had been removed, and the ground nearby was littered with trash.

Still, it was clear that a lot of work and a lot of love went into this memorial. I’m sure it’s cultural, but it was interesting to see the differences between the descansos of the Pacific Northwest and those here in Mexico. I’m heading back to Mexico in a few weeks and will have more time to take photos; maybe I’ll find someone who can help me understand the descansos de Mexico a little better.

Descanse en paz, stranger.
