Hugo

Google Maps actually has a descanso on it. Altar is on Mexican Highway 200 and is listed as a “religious destination.” I was excited when I noticed this and so that was my destination on our final day in Punta Mita … but there was no way to park safely and get to the memorial itself.

Not to be deterred I scanned Google Maps around the Altar and, unsurprisingly, found Hugo.

Hugo’s memorial was just a few kilometers up the road and offered a safe place to park. The structure is fairly new — Hugo was killed on January 17, 2024 — and has a depiction of Jesus cast in metal inside the structure.

Hugo’s family has planted climbing flowers on either side of the memorial and so no doubt in a few years this will be a beautiful shrine to their loss.
