Annie

Annie

I am back in Central Oregon, and at this point I have covered about as much of deadly Highway 97 as I am going to be able to until the snow melts. Instead I am starting to explore some of the smaller highways, knowing that they may not have as many descansos because they don’t see the same volume of traffic.

But for sure, they still have descansos.

I went Southeast on Oregon Highway 31, basically the road from Bend, Oregon to Reno, Nevada, and it wasn’t too long before I came across Annie.

Annie was killed in 1987 when she was nineteen years old. Given that this happened more or less before the Internet I didn’t expect to find any information online about the accident.

I didn’t.

Given that it has been nearly forty years since her death it’s heartening to see a well-maintained cross, some nice colored lights on the ground, and a single pink carnation that looks almost new.

I hope my people still think of me after forty years.

Rest in peace, Annie.
