Ender
I was hopeful that the name “Ender” clearly visible on this descanso would help me tell a little more of the story. The memorial is sitting in a busy area in the St. John’s neighborhood in Vancouver, Washington, on the parking easement at a little mall. In this instance the Internet should have come through.
But no, alas. Perhaps my Google-fu has run out.

It’s too bad, because I suspect there is an interesting story. The wood used on the cross is worn, not by time I don’t think, but worn perhaps purposefully as if the wood meant something to Ender.

Other than what I assume to be the name stamped on the wood there is nothing else but a simple flower, also stamped, at the top of the cross. The entire cross is surrounded by flowers at the base, and the result is a sort of surreal little pop of color in the midst of what is normally a reasonably busy mall.
If only the flowers could talk and tell the tale.

Rest in peace, Ender.
