“No left turn,” says the sign, and the road is divided with yellow stanchions, too flimsy to stop a car and do much more than alert the driver to their mistake.

Denise Douglas was thirty-nine when she died on North Kīhei Road. While driving at night she crossed the yellow line — presumably before the yellow stanchions were there — over-corrected, lost control. and hit the fence. She wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, she was speeding, and she may have been drinking.

It doesn’t make it any less sad, and it’s clear that she was loved. It just makes it what it is.

Rest in peace, Denise.
